  5. Welcome to Macromedia Fontographer« 4.1 for Windows(TM)! If you run 
  6. into a question and don't see the answer here, or in your 
  7. documentation, then please examine the "4.1 TechNotes" frequently asked 
  8. questions file (TechNote.wri) before calling for technical support. The 
  9. file is in Windows Write/WordPad format. Open it in virtually any word 
  10. processor, or import it into your page layout program.

  30. Minimum System requirements: Windows 3.1 with 32s v1.3;  6 MB 
  31. RAM; 5 MB HD space.

  35. There is some possibility that you may not get the correct program icon 
  36. if you are installing onto Windows 3.1 and updating it to 32s at the 
  37. same time. To get the correct icon, open the File Manager, go to File, 
  38. Properties, and click "OK."
  39.

  42. The first time you run Fontographer, it will display a Personalization 
  43. dialog. Look at the Serial Number card in your box for the 18-digit 
  44. Serial Number which will allow you to use Fontographer.
  45.  
  46. If the serial number is not typed correctly, Fontographer will not run. 
  47. Be sure to include the dashes. If you paste in your serial number 
  48. rather than typing it in, the OK box will remain grey. Please type in 
  49. your serial number -- you don't really want it cluttering up your disk, 
  50. anyway -- and staple the serial number card into your manual! Please 
  51. retain the card with your records, since you will need the information 
  52. for technical support, or if you install Fontographer on a different 
  53. machine.

  57. If you notice that Fontographer's sounds preferences is greyed out, 
  58. this is because you either don't have a sound board, or the board you 
  59. have is not asychronous.

  63. Windows User Interface Guidelines say that all Windows should be 
  64. maximized when one is maximized. Therefore, when a font is maximized, 
  65. an opened character or bitmap window will also be maximized.

  69. In characters with "counters" (like "o"), where the outside path should 
  70. go clockwise and the other should be COUNTERclockwise, beware: if both 
  71. paths go in the same direction, the character will print solid black, 
  72. with no white center. To avoid unpleasant surprises like this, check 
  73. your path directions -- or, use Fontographer's useful, time-saving 
  74. function, "Correct path direction" -- before font generation.

  78. What settings do the "easy" kern and spacing functions use? Well, Easy 
  79. AutoKern is equivalent to (but faster than) using Advanced Kerning when 
  80. it is set on the default values, where the "Technique" pop-up menu is 
  81. set to Examine Average Distance.

  83. Easy AutoSpace results are the same as Advanced, where the "Technique" 
  84. pop-up menu is set to Examine Average Distance.

  88. If you create a font for the Macintosh using Fontographer 4.1 on your 
  89. PC, use our Macromedia conversion utility (called MMPC2MAC) to finish 
  90. the process ON THE MACINTOSH! This is a Macintosh application that 
  91. builds Macintosh font files ONLY from files that are produced using 
  92. the Windows version of Fontographer 4.1. If you are running Windows 
  93. 3.1, you will not see the $ appended to the name of the font as 
  94. described in your documentation. This is because Windows 3.1 uses 
  95. the 8.3 naming convention. You will still be able to successfully 
  96. convert your files. Note that you CAN'T convert the font files while 
  97. they are on the diskette -- they must be copied to the hard drive of 
  98. the Macintosh.

  102. When autotracing a bitmap, particularly a signature, it is possible 
  103. to overflow the buffer. If your trace has lines sticking out all 
  104. over it, undo it, undo the paste, and go back and break the bitmap up 
  105. into sections. Then paste the sections into individual character cells, 
  106. and trace.
  107.

  110. Sometimes when opening an existing font, the space character is not 
  111. defined. Be sure that your space character has a width! Otherwise you 
  112. may get bullets in your PostScript font!
  113.

  116. The Control key causes a demagnified move -- but it is also used for 
  117. other key combinations. If you find, for example, that you want to 
  118. temporarily switch to the arrow tool and drag-select an object, when 
  119. you start moving the mouse it will go VERY slowly. As long as the 
  120. Control key was depressed before you started dragging, you can let 
  121. go of it and the arrow tool will still be selected -- which will 
  122. move a lot faster!

  126. For non-Roman fonts, here are some sample entries for the
  127. Font Info/OS/2 Data/Code Page text field:

  133. 00000040 - Arabic

  138. If you open a symbol-encoded font and try to generate a new 
  139. (non-symbol) font from it, the characters won't show when using the 
  140. new font. This is because of the unicode numbers assigned to the 
  141. symbols. In order to successfully regenerate the symbol font as a 
  142. "regular" font, you will have to set the code page to default, or 
  143. simply copy and paste the characters into a new empty font.

  147. Since certain characters (such as the curly quotes) don't exist in some 
  148. Windows system fonts, when you type these characters into a field which 
  149. uses that font (such as AutoKern/Advanced/Which characters), you will 
  150. see only bars for your text. The characters will still get kerned, 
  151. they just can't show up in the text field.

  155. Your custom-named characters, and a few others which are not visually 
  156. represented, will appear as a double asterisk (**) in the Font Window 
  157. (when viewing by Character).

  160. PRINTING WITH FONTOGRAPHER'S PRINT COMMAND
  161.  
  162. If you have difficulty printing via Fontographer's "Print" command, 
  163. then you most likely have a print driver that isn't 100% Windows 
  164. compatible, or you don't have the proper fonts installed. Below are 
  165. some tips to help you print successfully.
  166.  
  167. -    Install Arial: Fontographer depends on the font "Arial" for 
  168.     most of its printing. You should install this font from your 
  169.     Windows disks if it is not already installed.
  170.  
  171. -    Always print a test page: When you install your print driver, 
  172.     you should print a test page if the installer prompts you to 
  173.     do so. This will test the basic operation of the print driver. 
  174.     If you're running Windows95, the test page should contain about 
  175.     half a page of information about your printer. If you only see 
  176.     a small graphic at the top of the page, or less than one-third 
  177.     of a page of information, then your driver probably isn't 100% 
  178.     Windows compatible.
  179.  
  180. -    Choose a different print driver: Changing print drivers will 
  181.     almost always solve your printing problems. In general, you 
  182.     should switch to a driver with a similar name, and probably a 
  183.     less complex name. For example, if you have trouble printing 
  184.     to an Apple LaserWriter Pro 630, then switch to the basic 
  185.     AppleLaserWriter driver. Consult your Windows user manual to 
  186.     learn more about changing print drivers.
  187.  
  188. -    The "Apple LaserWriter" driver: This driver works well for most 
  189.     PostScript laser printers, including the Apple LaserWriter Pro 
  190.     series, the HP LaserJet 4M series, and many others.
  191.  
  192. -    Where to get new drivers: If you can't find a driver that works, 
  193.     then contact your printer manufacturer. You can probably find 
  194.     their phone number in the manual that came with your printer. 
  195.     Printer manufacturers frequently release new drivers that fix 
  196.     compatibility problems.

  200. If you are using pressure sensitive tablets with Fontographer, then be 
  201. sure you have the most recent versions of the software drivers. In 
  202. testing, we used the Wacom Art-Z tablet, the only tablet with an 
  203. available Windows95 driver that we could get our hands on during 
  204. development.

  208. The Logitech PageScan (TM) Color Scanner will scan bitmaps directly 
  209. into Fontographer's template layer. This may work quite well for you, 
  210. or it may be better to scan them into Paint/PaintBrush, clean up the 
  211. scan, select the area you want to trace, and then use copy and paste 
  212. to get the bitmap into Fontographer.
